Playin' in the Band typically was played for anywhere between 10 to 45 minutes during the time that Donna was with the band. The first sung part lasts about 3-4 minutes (?) the second, maybe 2 minutes at most (?). Donna wails for a max of 30 seconds right before the 2nd set of vocals. That leaves anywhere from 4 to 38 minutes for the rest of the band to make Playin' a flight of fancy telepathic mind meld freakout jam (some might even argue, their finest vehicle).

I'm sure some nights D.J. Godchaux was SCARY enough to make people shite in their pantaloons. Perhaps she was capable of completely wiping away the elevated state of awareness and sensitivity brought about by the boys ringing the bells of heaven? Personally, that 30 seconds of hellacious shrieking is sometimes enjoyable, sometimes makes me jump, reach for the volume, or just laugh, but there's no way that it could ever possibly outshine or make me forget what just happened during that jam!

If you listen to AUDs from the Godchaux years, you would hear people cheering like mad right as Donna's screaming her head off. Perhaps it wasn't so unpleasant, and actually somewhat grounding, to hear a blood-curtling scream after hurling through abstract space for the last 20 minutes?

Whoa, that was a seriously stoned rant on my part. For a few months, I have been trying to formulate my points against Donna bashers and your post stimulated a break-through.

30 seconds of Donna screaming can't overshadow the many minutes of beautiful jams experienced just before.

But yes, just imagine a compilation of 30 second clips of Donna and her various Yeeeoooooowwwh!'s from over the years. Frightening!

Yet somehow this reminds me of the Budweiser commercials that cut from guy to guy (or grandma to grandma) as they are all screaming "WAAADDDAAAAP".
